About CaLSAM

CalSAM stands for Content-and-language sensitive Approach to Multlingualism in School. The aim of CaLSAM is to strengthen multilingual education in mathematics teaching. Multilingualism is increasingly recognised as a valuable learning resource. Consequently, there are growing efforts to incorporate students’ multilingual resources specifically into content-specific learning and utilise them productively. The CaLSAM project aims to enhance the existing body of scientific knowledge and practical approaches to multilingual teaching and learning in mathematics classes. As part of the project, learning opportunities are being created in which pre-service and in-service teachers engage in reflective discussion about multilingualism.

Over the next three years, we will develop and evaluate an innovative professional development programme for mathematics teachers. The programme will focus on the language-and-content sensitive design of teaching and learning processes in mathematics. Specifically, we will create synchronous and asynchronous CaLSAM modules to enable teachers (current and prospective) to incorporate and make productive use of their students’ linguistic resources in mathematics learning.
